Prosperity & Opportunity
This is a critical time in the history of the United States. The systems that promoted opportunity and growth of the middle class in the last century have eroded; policies meant to broaden access to education, affordable housing, good jobs and fair lending have been weakened, de-emphasized and left antiquated and unable to address modern economic challenges. As a nation, we need to be better equipped to ensure the economic stability of today's households and help create a path to a stable middle class for future generations.
Demos seeks to reverse declining opportunity and widening inequality by developing new research and policy ideas that will help lead to a New Social Contract that offers the widest sharing of prosperity and opportunity in 21st century America. These ideas support widespread access to higher education, the creation of good jobs with career ladders, eliminating the predatory credit card and other lending practices that came with widespread deregulation, to promote policies that stabilize the family economy and also promote a strong launch pad for today's young adults into their working lives. The Economic Opportunity Program at Demos, along with key Demos Fellows are producing research, and are working with policymakers in Washington and around the country, developing advocacy campaigns, and talking with the media and concerned citizens about the critical economic issues of our times.
