Demos and The American Prospect Magazine Announce Partnership

New York--This week, Demos and The American Prospect magazine (www.prospect.org) announced a strategic and institutional partnership of the two organizations with the following joint statement:

Demos and The American Prospect have a strong set of shared values and complementary missions. The American Prospect for twenty years has been a leading progressive magazine and, in recent years, a premier website for cutting edge analysis. For ten years, Demos has been an important center for research, public policy and advocacy. Both institutions are united in our efforts to realize an America with economic growth and widely shared prosperity; a vibrant and inclusive democracy; a robust public sector; and a new, more collaborative role for the United States in an interdependent world. We have a shared history of working closely together on Special Reports, joint events, and other partnered ventures, and look forward to many years of high-impact, integrated work.

The American Prospect and Demos both believe that our country is in a moment of profound possibility for progressive reform, and that the partnership of the two institutions will allow both to operate more effectively and with greater impact. And in this current publishing environment, with the convergence of print, broadcast and social media in so many forms, it makes sense for us to join with Demos-to combine resources, skill and energy. This is a union that will be a sum of more than its parts, and we'll have much greater impact in the years ahead.

Under the agreement, approved by the Boards of Directors of the two organizations on February 10, Miles Rapoport, President of Demos, will become the President and CEO of The American Prospect as well. Executive Editor Mark Schmitt and Co-editors Bob Kuttner and Paul Starr will retain editorial responsibility for the magazine and www.prospect.org., and will have complete editorial autonomy in regard to their content. George Slowik Jr. will continue as Publishing Director. Demos & The American Prospect will work closely to combine all administrative and financial operations. The two organizations will share offices in both Washington and New York.

Five members of The American Prospect Board have been elected to the Demos Board of Trustees, and five members of the Demos Board have been elected to the Board of The American Prospect.

The Agreement went into effect March 1, 2010.
