Reclaiming Conservatism: How a Great American Political Movement Got Lost - and How it Can Find Its Way Back
July 24, 2008
12:00-2:00pm
Demos
220 Fifth Ave., 5th Floor
New York, NY (btwn. 26th & 27th)

As the Bush presidency draws to a close and many believe that the Democrats are poised to win the White House and increase their margin in Congress, analysts are examining the reasons for the decline of the conservative movement. Join Demos as we listen to a real insider, former Congressman Mickey Edwards, discuss his own evocative analysis from his new book Reclaiming Conservatism. Edwards, from his vantage point as a dedicated leader of the American conservative movement, tells us his views of the evolution of conservatism, the mistakes made, and how they can be corrected.

About Reclaiming Conservatism in the author's own words:
"This book is not about how conservatives can win elections, it's not about conservatives spending too much or increasing the size of the federal deficit. It's not about conservatives not being 'compassionate' enough or competent enough. It's about something far more fundamental. It's about today's conservatives having become the single greatest threat to the American system of government, recognizing few limits either on federal power or on the concentration of power in the hands of a single individual.

This book pins the blame for the nastiness and partisanship in Congress on Newt Gingrich and on the very specific tactics of House Republicans under Gingrich's leadership. Nobody else has made this point. This book actually shows, as nobody else has ever done, the evolution in the conservative movement by tracing changes in the Republican Party platform."

Mickey Edwards was a member of Congress for 16 years and chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee. He has taught at Harvard and Georgetown and is now on the faculty of Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and a vice president of the Aspen Institute. He has been a regular columnist for the Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times and a weekly commentator on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered".

Youth to Power: How Today's Young Voters Are Building Tomorrow's Progressive Majority
July 29, 2008
12:00pm - 2:00pm
Demos
220 Fifth Ave., 5th Floor
New York, NY (btwn. 26th &27th)

Join Demos for a discussion with Michael Connery author of Youth to Power: How Today's Young Voters Are Building Tomorrow's Progressive Majority.

Youth to Power: How Today's Young Voters Are Building Tomorrow's Progressive Majority examines how today's young people are combining technology with a vigorous social spirit to revive progressive politics. In addition to recounting the history of youth politics since its emergence in the 1972 election, as well as showing where the movement still lags behind its more organized conservative counterpart, the book features interviews with many of the major figures in the youth political movement, and identifies strategies that the Democratic Party can use to capitalize on its new advantages with young voters. Youth to Power is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the political and cultural future of America.

Michael Connery spent his early political years involved in the Dean Campaign and growth of the netroots. In 2004, he also co-founded Music for America, and served as its Communications Director and Web Editor. Currently Michael is a participant in the Center for Independent Media New Journalism Program. Through his fellowship with the Center, he writes full-time about progressive youth politics at his blog, Future Majority. In addition, he is also a weekend front-page writer on the popular political blog MyDD.com, and an occasional contributer to TechPresident.com and the Huffingon Post's "Off the Bus" blog.
